Let’s be honest—one of the hardest parts of getting organized is simply knowing where to start.

When everything feels like a mess, it’s easy to overthink it, get overwhelmed, and… do nothing.

That’s why I love what I call “cherry picking organizing.”

It’s simple. It’s low-pressure. And it works.

What is Cherry Picking Organizing?

Think about picking cherries—you grab the low-hanging fruit first. The easy ones. The ones you don’t need a ladder or extra effort to reach.

That’s exactly what this method is.

You’re not trying to organize everything perfectly. You’re just starting with what’s easy, obvious, and requires the least amount of thinking.

And here’s the magic:
👉 It builds momentum
👉 It gets the ball rolling
👉 It gets everyone involved

Step 1: Start with Trash

Pick a room or area and cherry pick all the trash.

That’s it. No overthinking. No sorting every little thing.

Just grab empty packaging, old papers, and anything that is clearly trash. Toss it. Recycle if you want.

This is a great one to get everyone involved in—kids, partners, anyone. It’s quick, easy, and immediately makes a difference.

Step 2: Return Items to Their “Right Location”

Next, look for anything that simply doesn’t belong in that space.

Dishes go back to the kitchen. Shoes go back to the closet. Sports equipment goes back to the garage.

If you have time to put it fully away, great. If not, just get it back to the right room.

You can even use a basket or bag and do a quick sweep.

I like to say—you’re kind of like the Easter Bunny… except instead of delivering things, you’re returning them to where they belong.

Maybe not as exciting, but very effective.

Step 3: Grab the “Easy Yes” Items

Now keep that momentum going.

Look for anything that has an obvious next step.

Something to return? Put it by the door.
Something for a friend? Put it in a labeled bag.
Something that belongs in your car? Take it out.

No deep decisions. Just the easy wins.

Step 4: Light Grouping

If you’re still going, start lightly grouping things.

Put all the remotes together. Stack papers in one spot. Gather similar items.

You’re not fully organizing—you’re just making things more visible and accessible.

Why This Works

This isn’t about perfection.

It’s about clearing space, reducing visual clutter, making things easier to find, and getting items closer to where they belong.

And sometimes, you even find something you’ve been looking for.

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to do everything. You just have to start somewhere.

Cherry pick the easy stuff. Build momentum. Let that carry you forward.

So tell me… who’s trying this this weekend?
