Hey friends!
Spring is officially here, and I don’t know about you, but I am all about that summer vibe—warmer weather, sunny days, and the joy of being outside more. But before we dive into beach trips and poolside fun, there’s the small (but totally necessary) task of transitioning our homes from winter to spring and summer.
Now, I know the idea of switching out everything from coats to sandals can feel like a lot. But trust me, this is the perfect time to take stock of what you have, what you need to restock, and—let’s be real—what you can donate, toss, or pass on. There’s something so refreshing about clearing out what no longer serves you and making space for what truly matters.
Here’s how I like to approach this seasonal transition, and I’m excited to share a few tips with you. Whether you have little ones running around or just need to refresh your own routine, these steps can make the whole process feel lighter and easier.

1. Check the Essentials for Warmer Weather
The first step is to take an inventory of all the seasonal items you’ll need easy access to. Check expiration dates on sunscreen, bug spray, and even things like allergy medications (I don’t know about you, but I am already prepping for those pollen-heavy days!). Don’t forget to pull out hats, sunglasses, and those beach bags you’ve tucked away in a closet. Make sure you have what you need so that when the warm weather hits, you can enjoy it without scrambling for essentials.
2. Swap Out Coats & Outerwear
I don’t know about you, but I always feel like the bulky winter coats take over so much space in my closet. It’s time to say goodbye to the puffers and wool coats for a bit (unless you’re in a colder area, of course). Start swapping them out for lighter jackets and cardigans that are perfect for layering during the transitional weather. The goal is easy access to what you need without feeling like your closet is holding onto unnecessary weight.
3. Bring Out Warmer Weather Shoes
Winter boots can be heavy and take up a lot of space—so let’s swap those out for sandals, flip-flops, and sneakers that are more suited for warm weather! Take a moment to check the condition of those shoes—are they still in good shape, or is it time to donate them? If you’re like me and tend to accumulate footwear over the years, now’s the perfect time to get rid of pairs that no longer serve you. You’ll feel lighter, and so will your closet.
4. Sort Through Kids’ Warm Weather Clothes
As our kids grow (way too fast!), it can be easy to let warm-weather clothes pile up without realizing what no longer fits. Take a moment to go through their warm-weather gear—shorts, T-shirts, swimsuits—and see what still works and what needs to be donated. It’s the perfect time to refresh and see what you need to buy for the season ahead. Plus, this process will help reduce that end-of-summer rush to buy new clothes when you realize the whole closet is too small!
5. Donate Winter Clothes You’re Not Using
As you’re swapping out outerwear, consider donating any coats, scarves, gloves, or sweaters that you didn’t wear this past winter. It’s such a great way to make space for the new season while also doing something positive for someone else who could use those items. The less clutter you have hanging around, the more energized and ready you’ll feel for all the fun things summer has in store!
6. Tidy Up Pool & Beach Gear
Pull out your pool and beach gear for a quick inspection—does anything need replacing? Toss any beach towels that have seen better days, check the condition of your beach chairs, and ensure that the kids’ pool toys are still intact and ready for the fun ahead. There’s nothing better than having everything organized and ready for those spontaneous summer outings!
7. Make Room for Seasonal Hobbies
Lastly, this is a great time to make space for all those fun spring and summer hobbies! Whether it’s gardening tools, outdoor games, or sports equipment, take a look at your garage, basement, or closet and make room for the things that bring you joy during these months. Decluttering around these items will not only make your space more functional, but it will also make it easier to dive into your seasonal fun without frustration.
Bonus Tip: Don’t feel like you have to do it all in one day (or weekend). I know it can be tempting to want to knock everything out in one go, but trust me—spacing it out can make the process feel way less overwhelming. Try tackling one of these tasks each day or weekend, and before you know it, you’ll have everything sorted and ready for the season. Little steps add up, and you’ll feel way more in control without all the stress! 😊
I absolutely love this time of year. It’s a moment for a fresh start, and even if it feels like a bit of work, this seasonal transition can be SO worth it. It’s not just about swapping out clothes—it’s about bringing more light into our homes and making space for what really matters as we head into these warmer months.
So, let’s embrace the change, simplify what we can, and get excited for the fun ahead. Summer is calling, and we’re ready to answer!
