First of all—happy new year! I hope your holidays were magical, peaceful, and maybe just a little bit sparkly. I’m slowly easing into this new year too, and while I have lots I want to share with you at the right time, today I want to talk about something that can immediately reduce clutter in your home (and your brain!).

Have you heard of the one touch rule? No, it’s not about the five-second rule when you drop food. 😉 This is all about your stuff. The idea is simple: try to touch items only once—or as few times as possible—when using them.

I know, I know—it sounds wild, maybe even impossible, especially for some of our family members. But trust me, following this rule can seriously cut down clutter. Imagine if every item you used got put back right away—how much more space would you have on your kitchen counters, dining table, couch, entryway, or even your bedroom? The possibilities are endless. Exciting, right?

How It Works

Immediate Action: When you’re done using something, put it where it belongs right then. No lingering on the counter or chair. That minute usually turns into hours, days, or longer.

One Motion: Instead of touching an item multiple times, handle it in one motion.
Example: Dropping a coat on a chair (touch one) and moving it to a hook later (touch two)? Skip the chair—hang it up immediately. One touch, done.

Designated Homes: Every item should have a specific place. When you know where things belong, it’s so much easier to follow the rule.
Example: Mail goes in the inbox right away, shoes go on the rack, your kid’s backpack goes in her cubby—not on the floor.

Why It’s Worth It

  • Less clutter: Counters, tables, floors—they all stay clear.
  • Saves time: Fewer trips to pick things up or search for missing items.
  • Reduces stress: Visual clutter is mental clutter. A calmer space = a calmer mind.
  • Builds habits naturally: Doing small actions consistently makes staying organized easier long-term.

Tips for Making It Stick

  • Start small: Pick one area—maybe the kitchen counter or entryway—and focus there first.
  • Be realistic: You won’t be perfect, and that’s okay. The goal is fewer touches, not zero.
  • Create reminders: Hooks, bins, and labels make it easier to remember where things belong.
  • Make it fun: Turn it into a little challenge for the family—how many items can everyone put away with one touch?

Imagine starting your day with a clear kitchen, a tidy living room, and a clutter-free entryway—all because you touched your items only once. That’s the magic of the one touch rule. Start small, stay consistent, and watch your home—and your headspace—feel calmer, clearer, and so much easier to navigate.
