Hi Friend,
We all wish there was a magic button—hire someone, and poof, everything is perfect. But even the best custom closet company can’t do it all on their own. You need a plan, some prep, and the right guidance to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want and maximizing your investment.
Custom closet systems are amazing. They save time, reduce stress, and can even add value if you’re selling your home. But there are a few key steps you need to take before the design consultation—and during the process—to make sure your system actually works for you.
I don’t design closets myself—I don’t love measuring and all that—but I do know how to make sure a design aligns perfectly with a client’s needs. After years of helping clients before and after they’ve hired custom closet companies, here’s what I’ve learned:
Before the Consult
- Declutter and edit first. Go through clothes, shoes, and anything else you plan to store. Be ruthless—especially because this is an investment.
- Bring in an organizer. You’ll declutter more efficiently and make smarter decisions about what stays and what goes.
- Measure smart. Know how much long-hanging and short-hanging space you need before you walk into the consultation.
During the Process
- Ask for fully adjustable shelves. Make sure holes for shelf pegs go the full height so you can adapt later.
- Clarify expectations if removing an old system. Know exactly what the company will handle and what you need to plan for.
- Compare designs to your actual space. Don’t assume the plan will automatically fit perfectly.
- Have an organizer review plans. Even one review can save headaches.
- Confirm what’s being removed or patched. If an old system is being taken out, know exactly what “patching” means. A recent client had their old system “rough patched,” which meant the holes weren’t properly sanded or painted. They ended up either doing the work themselves or hiring a contractor—frustrating considering what they paid. Another client didn’t get the jewelry trays she wanted because the designer failed to communicate what was available. Clear expectations prevent these surprises.
- Stay engaged throughout installation. Have your plans accessible, check progress, and communicate changes immediately.
Any system—closet or otherwise—is an investment. The better prepared you are, the more value you get.
