Hi Friend,

Ever notice how work somehow expands to fill the time you give it? That’s Parkinson’s Law in action: tasks stretch until the deadline, whether it’s 5 minutes or 5 hours.

For me, the trick isn’t working harder — it’s working smarter with intentional boundaries. That’s where a timer comes in.

Here’s how I use it:

  1. I pick a few tasks from my to-do list — sometimes just one — and set a timer.
  2. I commit to getting them done within that window.
  3. I move steadily, focused, and notice how it changes my rhythm.

Using a timer does two powerful things:

  • It keeps me moving. Knowing the clock is ticking motivates action and prevents endless tweaking or procrastination.

  • It trains my time estimation skills. Over time, I get better at guessing how long tasks will actually take — which makes planning future days easier.

This method is flexible — you can set 15, 30, or 60 minutes depending on the task. Sometimes I underestimate on purpose to push myself, sometimes I overestimate to give wiggle room. Either way, the timer is my productivity ally, not a prison.

Why This Works

Parkinson’s Law is everywhere: emails, meetings, writing blog posts… anything. Giving your brain a defined window forces focus and prevents the “work expands” trap.

It’s also surprisingly empowering: you see progress in real time, instead of feeling like the day ran away from you.

Tiny Action to Try Today

Pick one task on your to-do list.
Set a timer — even just 20 minutes.
Work until the timer goes off. Notice how it changes your pace and focus.

Do this consistently, and you’ll start mastering your time instead of letting it master you.
